Lesson 8

Dear Teni,
Thank you for your eighth message. My comments and corrections follow.
Sincerely,
Prof. Sue Garreis

Dear Prof. Susan Garreis
Hello.
Thank you for your reply.

At five years of age the laptop is just ready to die. I had already installed a new motherboard two years ago. Even though it is inconvenient, it was better that I bought a new computer.
-> I think this was the way to help you save some money.
> Yes, installing the motherboard was a way of saving money.
Taking a friend with me when I bought the new computer was also a way of saving money. He is a "techie" (one very knowledgeable about computers), so he could advise me as to what I needed and what I didn't.

That is an interesting thing for me to get used to.
-> You seem like to use the touch screen.
> I really prefer using the mouse. But I know that touch screens are the way of the future, so I am getting used to touch screens.

Does your computer have a touch screen? Does your phone have a touch screen? Many younger people in the US use phones with touch screens.
-> No, it does not. It does not have touch screen. It's a macbook computer, Core I5 chips that I bought 3 years ago, after one year since I came to Japan.
I am using iphone, touch screen. I had to jailbroken it. Do you know the jailbreak is?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IOS_jailbreaking
It is an application for system intrusion. For example: When you want to unlock iphone, it will have the words "slide to unlock", when your phone was jailbroken, you can change the text in any word that you want, including your name.
More exciting thing of jailbreak is you can download purchase apps on appstore but not losing money. I've used it to buy japanese dictionary for my iphone.
> I had never heard of jailbreaking before. Thanks for telling me about it. After reading the Wikipedia article, I can understand why people jailbreak. My phone is much more simple, so I don't need to jailbreak. I do not download much of anything on it. I never use it to read email or Facebook. The screen is too small for me.

I know there are many duplicates of the photos. The computer has several places to store pictures. I never really figure out where the photos go. So sorting the photos transferred will mean eliminating the duplicates. I probably have about three thousand photos actually. And it will take me more than a month to sort them. I am in no hurry to do that. The photos are safe on the DVDs, so I can take my time. I take many pictures of my flowers. They will be easy to sort.
-> I also sort photo, my photoes is not so much. I usually save photo in 3 places. macbook, HDD and dropbox. My HDD is 2 Terabyte (TB) and it can contain more than 100.000 photos. And I reserve photos on the internet with dropbox.

www.dropbox.com
Wow! Two terabytes of space for photos! I can't even imagine that many photos. You can probably store videos there, too, right? Videos take a lot more space than photos.

We both agree that we like Windows 7 better than Windows 8.
-> Yes, I think so.
> Windows 8 has more errors than windows 7. I do not like to use Windows 8.

I remember that I had a lot of trouble adjusting to a Windows environment from a DOS environment.
-> I think MS-DOS has a lot of interesting things that I do not known. I think I will learn MS-DOS on the internet when I have time.
> I never learned programming languages, except for a very little bit of C. But I could understand better the logic of DOS. Here is a basic DOS Tutorial: people.uncw.edu/pattersone/121/labs/L1_MSDOS_Primer.pdf.

It may give you an idea of what is going on in DOS. There are some videos on YouTube on DOS commands, too. That will be something to do over your summer break. That is an American attempt at humor. I know you will be very busy in the summer.

With best wishes
Nguyen Hung Thien

Friday was our nation's two hundred thirty-eighth birthday party. July 4 is the biggest national holiday in the US.
We celebrate with fireworks, and picnics. There is no summer school that day. Almost everyone is off from work.
I went to Delaware for some errands that day. On the way back home in the late evening, I listened to patriotic music while I drove my favorite road. It was a great experience. This is funny video on YouTube of Annapolis fireworks on Friday: http://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=Annapolis+Fireworks+2014&FORM=VIRE1#view=detail&mid=919E13571A26AD2305D1919E13571A26AD2305D1
It is time-lapse photography. It speeds up what was several hours of film. "The Ride of the Valkyries" is the background music. Fireworks shows in towns such as mine are about twenty minutes long.
Have you seen fireworks?
What was the occasion?
Where did you see the fireworks?
